It begins with an Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) military demonstration at an outdoor soccer stadium, possibly Cộng Hoà Stadium (now Thống Nhất Stadium). It then shows scenes shot in more rural areas, including shots of a junk or sampan fishing fleet. The location is unknown but might be Vung Tau or Cap Saint-Jacques, both popular retreats from Saigon during the war. A large hotel is visible at (14:11) but has so far been unidentified. 0:00 The film opens with armed female AVRN members practicing for a drill or demonstration in an outdoor stadium (:10). They pass empty stands soon to be filled for a formal review (1:08). Women hold rifles in the center of the greenway (1:23). Shots sweep military trucks, large barrels and ammunition supplies (1:37). Close angles watch the female soldiers march (2:07). The stands and field fill for the formal drill (2:26). An official stands at the podium (2:55). Crowds line the sidelines (3:08). A group of young soldiers walk off the grounds; Southern Vietnamese flags wave at the bottom screen (3:35). A medic truck sits outside the arena (3:43). Footage transitions to a man in a wooded area (7:02) springing up a tree. Ropes hang from the trees (7:24). At the top of the tree he balances a large stick as telephone wires hang in the background (7:30). He slips to the ground using the ropes (7:54) dropping into attention barefoot on the dirt (8:01). Two locals row a small boat over blue waters; one wears a rice paddy hat (8:03). Junk boats fill the harbor (8:14). Footage sweeps an open air market (8:31). Locals move goods and supplies on and off boats (8:42). Numerous sampans fill harbor waters, mountains rim the background (9:34). The flat bottomed boats are iconic of Vietnam used for transportation, fishing as well as for military transport during the war. Footage switches to the fishing village, women fix one another’s hair seated on the ground by a bamboo fence (10:00). Four children pose happily together (10:11). Shots pan over thatched roof dwellings for a pile of sandbags and a lookout post or observation tower (10:28). Footage continues to move over the bamboo exterior wall (10:53). A group huddles over a gameboard (11:00). Another carts a large portion of fishing net using carrying pole (11:51). The iconic thung chair boat; a round basket boat often used by fishermen, appears (12:08). Close shots watch a man’s hand sew a fishing net (12:25). In the background at (14:11), a large resort hotel is visible. A pair smoke tobacco at an outdoor table littered with booze bottles (14:24). The film concludes with images of locals passing uniformed military men of the AVRN (14:51) as well as Southern Vietnamese National Police in white uniforms (15:00) in an unidentified town. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
